Non-Confidential Resources for Students

UChicago CARES is committed to supporting our students. We follow our student’s leads, and are here to provide support and resources, regardless of whether a student wants to formally report or seek resolution options. We know that our students are the experts in their lives, and we are dedicated to creating a safer and more inclusive environment. UChicago CARES can assist students with the following supports and resources:

Assistance accessing and navigating campus and local services

Campus Services: We can assist students in receiving priority care at UChicago Student Wellness for mental health care, including connecting students directly to the highly-trained Trauma Team. Students can also receive help in connecting with Student Wellness and UChicago Medicine for medical care. With the student’s permission, we work directly with Financial Aid, the Bursar’s Office, the Dean of Students, and many other campus services to coordinate support services.

Community Resources: There are services in our local community that are available to students, and UChicago CARES can assist in accessing and utilizing these providers. Examples of local services include medical support, legal support, mental health care, and culturally specific care. See Community Resources for more information

University of Chicago Police Department: UCPD can be a resource for students who want to make a law enforcement report or receive support from law enforcement. They can also help connect students with the Chicago Police Department, as needed.

Changes or accommodations for academics, housing, dining, and working

Academic Accommodations may include communicating with advisors and professors regarding absences from classes, rescheduling exams, and deadline extensions.

Housing Accommodations may include moving houses, moving residence halls, or assistance ending or changing current leases.

Dining Accommodations may include changing primary dining commons or changing meal plan.

Work Accommodations may include connecting with managers at University-based positions, work study, or internships to assist in changing schedules or managing absences.

Obtaining a University issued No Contact Directive

A No-Contact Directive (NCD) is an administrative action designed to prevent contact between two or more individuals. NCDs can be issued based on request or need, and do not require the filing of a formal complaint.

  • No-Contact Directives are mutual and non-punitive.
  • It does not mean that there has been a policy violation, but rather is issued on a case-by-case basis in response to a report of potential harm.
  • This directive prohibits contact between both parties, including in-person contact, electronic contact, or contact through a third party. This does not prevent the parties from being in the same place at the same time or seeing each other on or off-campus.

Referrals to resolution processes

UChicago CARES can support students in learning more about resolutions options, such as investigations or alternative resolution processes. Students can learn more about those options on the Reporting Options for Students page.

Noting/documenting the incident

Students can choose to share information about their experience to UChicago CARES without choosing to file a formal complaint to the University. UChicago CARES will document this experience and may use this information to track trends, patterns of behavior, and assess climate concerns across campus. Generally, we will not take any form of action on these disclosures without the consent of the student impacted by the behavior. However, in very rare circumstances UChicago CARES may need to proceed with an investigation based on the information received.

Holistic support for students experiencing gender-based discrimination or harassment

UChicago CARES supports all parties involved in resolution processes (including friends, witnesses, and those who have been accused), and can assist with:

  • Referrals for mental health support; including both on and off-campus mental health resources
  • Referrals for legal assistance
  • Accommodations and support services; including academic, housing, dining, and working accommodations
